Yellow Jasmine Flower – Growing Tips & Benefits

You can plant yellow jasmine if you are looking for a vibrant, blooming twining vine for your backyard or garden. It’s a tropical and subtropical plant known as confederate jasmine, Carolina jasmine, Evening trumpet flower, and Woodbine. It doesn’t belong to the Jasminum genus, so this species is not considered a “True Jasmine “.

Yellow Jessamine is also considered the state flower of South Carolina in the United States. It can grow to 10-20 ft when given proper tree or pole support. This perennial has lush and dark green foliage and blooms clusters of vibrant yellow flowers in trumpet shape. Its mesmerizing fragranced flowers produce nectar, which attracts pollinators like bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in your garden.

Suppose you have pets and children at your home; you must be attentive because all parts of this jasmine are toxic to cats and dogs. It contains alkaloids and gelsemine, a toxic compound that should not be consumed.

The blooming season of this gorgeous-looking vine starts from February to May. It’s not a vigorous growing vine-like Asiatic Jasmine, also known as yellow star jasmine ( Trachelospermum Asiaticum ). Both are different plants, so don’t get confused between them.

Yellow Jasmine Care Tips

Soil

Yellow jasmine needs a well-draining, nutrient-rich, moist soil so that it can develop strong roots and spread its foliage. It grows well in USDA Zones 6-9. Carolina jessamine is not fussy about soil types; it can thrive in sandy, loamy, clayey soil. However, providing moderately alkaline soil with a pH of 5.5 to 8.0 is more suitable for its healthy growth.

If you are going to plant this gorgeous vine in a pot or container, you must ensure that it has drainage holes.

Sunlight

If you don’t have any space where these plants can get full sunlight, then you can plant them in partially shady areas. It will impact their flowering capacity. If you want your yellow jasmine vine to bloom with an abundance of flowers, then they require full sunlight. If you are still trying to understand how much sunlight it needs to thrive – In direct sunlight, 6 hr of warmth is enough for them, and if planted in partial shade, they need at least 2-3 hours of daylight.

Water

Immatured jasmine plants need to be watered two times a week so that they can develop strong roots and, after 30-40 days, water them when needed. Yellow jasmine prefers slightly moist soil but doesn’t like soggy soil; it can lead to root rot. You can use methods like bottom-watering or self-watering planters to keep the soil moist without any risk.

All these methods work only if the pot or container has a good drainage hole; only if some of those efforts go in vain will they go in vain.

  • Overwatering Signal: If you start witnessing mushy, soft, Pale, or brown leaves, then the plant is telling you to stop overwatering them. Fungus growth on the upper layer of the soil is also a signal of overwatering.
  • Underwatering Signal:  The edges of the leaves will look crunchy, and they will start curling. You will start seeing cracks in the soil.

Testing With Your Finger

  • If your soil feels dry after touching, then it needs to be watered.
  • If it feels damp, then hold your can and enjoy the plant’s foliage.

Fertilizer

If you want your pretty Carolina jessamine to keep blooming scented beauties in your garden, then feeding them at the right time is very important. To get the vibrant blooms, you can fertilize them with a balanced NPK ( 10:10:10 ) fertilizer. Feeding them at their initial stage and the beginning of the blooming will provide your jasmine plant with the nutrients that will help it grow healthy foliage, resulting in an abundance of blooms.

  • Feed them in spring when you start seeing fresh leaves in the plant.
  • After that, continue the feeding so that they can produce more flowers in summer.
  • In the fall, reduce the amount to prepare them for dormancy.
  • In winter, they don’t need to be fed during their resting period.

When To Prune Your Yellow Jessamine

Your yellow jasmine plant is ready to prune right after its blooming period, and pruning helps it prepare its foliage for the new blooming season.

  • Spot the discolored and crisp branches and prune them to prevent future disease spread.
  • Pruning also maintains the plant’s shape and gives the plant an aesthetic look; pinch out the tips and trim the teeming areas.
  • Using sterilized and sharp pruning shears to get a clean cut will reduce stress and achieve faster healing.
